Part 6: The Dynamics of Definition and the Importance of Being You

Understanding Definition in Human Design
One of the central elements in Human Design is the concept of definition. When Ra Uru Hu speaks about "definition," he refers to the consistent energetic patterns that make up the core of who you are. These are the parts of your Human Design chart that are colored in - your defined centers, channels, and gates.
Your definition is the stable, reliable frequency that operates within you. It doesn't change, and it's not influenced by other people. It is the voice of your truth, your natural expression in the world. In contrast, the undefined areas in your chart are where you are open - not broken, but open to life, influence, and interaction.
Ra would often emphasize that in relationships, what brings clarity is not compromise, but recognition of each other's definition.
Definition = Identity
Definition tells you what is consistent and reliable about you. These parts of your design are where your genetic truth lies. When you follow your Strategy and Authority - the way you're mechanically designed to make decisions - you begin to trust and live your definition.
Think of it this way:

Your definition is your signature frequency.

It is not about behavior, it is about mechanics.
-
Living your definition means staying true to your energetic consistency, not chasing homogenized ideals or conditioning.
This is especially important in relationships, where people often try to adapt, fix, or improve themselves for the other. But the moment we do that, we abandon our own design, and the relationship becomes built on illusion.
The Trap of Homogenization in Relationships
Ra warned strongly against what he called homogenization - the societal pressure to be like everyone else. In relationships, this shows up as:

Believing you need to feel love the way others feel it
-
Thinking a “good partner” must act a certain way
-
Suppressing your natural energy to fit in or please your partner
-
Misinterpreting your undefined centers as flaws to be fixed
When we live homogenized, we deny our uniqueness and disconnect from our strategy and authority. The moment you're out of alignment with your own design, you can’t be in a correct relationship, because the relationship is based on a false version of you.
Definition in Connection: What Happens When Two Designs Meet
Each person carries their own definition - their own frequency. When two people come together, their charts interact and form what’s known as a Connection Chart. This chart reveals:

Where energies are shared
-
Where there is compromise
-
Where there is dominance
-
Where attraction, challenge, and conflict may arise
Ra often said, “Relationship is mechanical.” This may sound cold, but what he meant was: relationships follow fixed energetic rules. When you understand the mechanics, you’re no longer tricked into thinking love is random or purely emotional. You begin to see clearly what works and what doesn’t - without blame.
Types of Connections Between Definitions
Let’s explore how definitions interact in relationships. Ra Uru Hu outlined four major types of connections in composite charts:
1. Electromagnetic Connections (Attraction)

These occur when one person has half of a channel and the other person has the other half. When you come together, the channel becomes complete.

It creates a strong feeling of pull - a sense that “you complete me.”
-
Ra emphasized that this is not necessarily healthy - attraction does not mean correctness.
-
It’s like magnetic glue, but without awareness, it can become addictive and codependent.
“The electromagnetics bring us together, but they can also tear us apart.”
2. Compromise Channels
-
These happen when both people have a channel, but one person has both gates, while the other only has one.
-
This is the most challenging relationship dynamic.
-
The person with the full channel tends to override or compromise the energy of the other, especially if unaware.
-
This often creates frustration, control, or resentment if the compromise is not consciously understood and respected.
“The compromise is the true battleground in a relationship.”
3. Dominance
-
In a dominance connection, one person brings a full channel that the other does not contribute to at all.
-
This creates a strong influence from the dominant person - they shape the energy of the interaction.
-
If both people are aware of their design, this can work beautifully - the dominant person holds space; the other supports.
-
If not aware, it can create imbalance, where one always feels overpowered.
4. Friendship (Companionship) Channels
-
These occur when both people share the same complete channel.
-
This creates a natural ease and resonance - you operate similarly in that energy.
-
This can bring comfort and support, but also lack of stimulation.
-
Friendship channels are great for peaceful, collaborative partnerships, though not always deeply romantic.
The Importance of Being Yourself
Ra Uru Hu would often say:
“You can’t find the right other until you find the right you.”
This means that no matter how compatible two charts may look on paper, if you’re not living your strategy and authority, you will not be able to hold your frequency in the relationship. You will get lost in the other’s energy, distort your behavior, and ultimately feel unfulfilled or resentful.
The secret to a correct relationship isn’t compromise.
It’s resonance.
Resonance happens when each person lives true to their own definition.
